Things to look for in a good immigration and citizenship representative

1. Find an authorized immigration and citizenship representative

According to the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, only the following persons can charge a fee for immigration and citizenship applications, such as temporary resident, permanent resident applications, etc.

– Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCIC) who are members of the College of Immigration Consultant & Citizenship
– Lawyers or notaries who are members of a Canadian provincial or territorial law society, or the Chambre des notaires du Québec
-Paralegals (Ontario only) who are members of the Law Society of Ontario

A Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) is legally authorized by CICC, the Canadian regulatory body. You can find all the RCICs’ contact information and licence status on CICC’s website. You should make sure that their licence status is active. This means that the RCIC is in good standing.

2. Sign a service agreement or contract

Before any service commences, the immigration consultant (RCIC) must give you a service agreement or contract to be signed by you and the RCIC, as required by CICC’s Retainer Agreement Regulation. The agreement should set out the exact duties of the consultant and the client, what and how the services will be provided, at what cost, and the complain process.

3. Sign the Using of a Representative Form

In the application submitted to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the client will be required to sign the Using of a Representative Form (IMM5467). The signed form will authorize your immigration consultant to represent you and to communicate with the IRCC during the application process.
